The Advanced Diploma in Clinical Supervision offers experienced practitioners the opportunity to deepen their knowledge, skills, and professional credibility as supervisors. This advanced programme is designed for counsellors, psychotherapists, and allied professionals who wish to develop robust supervisory practice in line with national professional standards. The course combines live online teaching, theory, experiential learning, and substantial supervised practice, ensuring that participants are confident, competent, and ethically grounded in their supervisory work. This Advanced Diploma is fully aligned with the requirements of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS) for supervisor qualifications.

This Advanced Diploma is fully aligned with the requirements of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS) for supervisor qualifications and application to the Supervisor Listing Directory. This means that during your training you will:

  • Undertake at least 20 hours of supervised supervision practice with a minimum of two supervisees.
  • Participate in live, synchronous teaching (real-time online), ensuring rich interaction, feedback, and skills development.
  • Complete a rigorous summative assessment to gain the qualification. Assessment methods go beyond multiple-choice questionnaires, focusing instead on applied competence, reflective ability, and integration of learning.

Sue has had a long career working with adults, children, young people and families in practice and an academic career at the Universities of Durham, Newcastle and Arden. She has written Diploma and Degree courses for universities in counselling, psychotherapy and clinical supervision as well as bespoke courses for organisations, including school counselling training for the EU. She has trained counsellors, psychotherapists and supervisors in Kenya, Hong Kong, South Africa and Turkey. Her work includes examining counselling and supervision courses at Universities such as Cambridge, Keele, Manchester, Nottingham, Edinburgh and Teesside. She was Joint Chair of the Children, Young People and Families Division of BACP for many years, and a supportive member of Counsellors Together UK. She has a busy counselling, supervision and training practice in the UK and France.

Overview

The Advanced Diploma in Clinical Supervision contains all the elements of a high-quality course that will help you to gain accreditation as a supervisor. The course is Accredited by the CPD Standards Office (pending). Level 6 qualifications are designed to deepen knowledge and expertise in a specific field, preparing students for professional careers or further academic study. The Advanced Diploma in Clinical Supervision is the CPD equivalent of Level 6 and is designed to address the UK Framework of Higher Education Qualifications Level 6. 

Knowledge - models and theories of supervision, ethics and the law

Skills - supervision competences

Michael Caroll's Integrative Model, Page and Wosket's Cyclical Model, the Seven-Eyed Model, Creative Models.

Supervised practice - with two or more supervisees to build up the 20 plus hours needed for supervisor Directory listing with NCPS

Expert 50 hours Live Online Teaching provided by Dr Sue Pattison and taught in the membership group TherapySPaCe (lessons recorded to watch later if you miss one). Monthly membership required until you have your 50 hours of teaching completed.

Eligibility 

Criteria

You are eligible to join the course if you are ready to build on your knowledge and skills and extend your practice to supervision. In addition, you must fulfil the following criteria and have a successful online or telephone interview.

You should be a qualified counsellor or psychotherapist with two years practice experience

You may already supervising and want a formal qualification

You need to have access to two supervisees to work with for the 20 hours (at least) practice part of the course

Your practice hours need to be supervised

You must provide an up to date CV

Course

Structure

The course is designed to be completed in a minimum of six months to allow time for the practice part of the course and the 50 live teaching hours. The three components of the Advanced Diploma are set out here along with the assessment requirements:

Knowledge

This part of the course is online and you will work through the required modules. There are three double modules, each with two main parts, as you will see in the curriculum. You can complete the online modules at your own pace, but one a month is recommended.

Skills

The skills used in your therapeutic work will be built on and those used in supervision will be developed through knowledge from models and theories, but also in your practice as a trainee clinical supervisor.

Practice

You will need to work with two or more supervisees for this course. You will be required to carry out at least 20 hours of supervised practice.

Assessment

The course is assessed through submission of a Portfolio of Evidence including a:

  • a 3000-word case study pulling together theory, skills and practice;
  • a 1000 -process report of becoming a supervisor feedback sheets from your supervisee(s).

All other components of the course must be completed (Confirmation of at least 20 hours of supervised practice, at least 50 hours of live teaching).
